All week long, our little Weather Girl, Maddie, has been watching Weather.com, where just like last year, they forecast rain, rain, rain on Saturday, but sunny and 60 degrees on Sunday for the Bay Head Halloween Parade. Witches, goblins, ghosts and Disney princesses will start gathering on Mount Street in Bay Head, New Jersey, shortly after 11am for the 11:45am parade start.

This year, London and Maddie are hoping to win another trophy as the Butter Bites, their all girl band — coming out of the basement to march along the parade route from Mount Street to the Bay Head Firehouse.  We’ve decked out their sport utility wagon (usually for hauling all of our towels, beach blankets, shovels and buckets to the beach) with their big bass drum and an amplifier for their music, which will feature the Butter Bites singing along with Taylor Swift faves like “Our Song,” “Fifteen,” “You Belong,” and “Teardrops On My Guitar,” as well as Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana’s “The Climb.”

Rex and I are going as the Pirate Parents… a naughty pair of swashbuckling pirates the likes of which Bay Head has never seen before!  Wish us luck… the competition is always tough… we’re not the only family in Bay Head that takes Halloween seriously!

In a few minutes, London and Maddie’s babysitter will arrive, and Rex and I will head out to Kitchens by the Sea, an amazing day of peeking into our neighbors’ kitchens and enjoying delicious food samples provided by local Jersey Shore restaurants and caterers.  This year’s participating restaurants include:

Every other year, the Bay Head School Foundation puts on Kitchens by the Sea, an amazing day of peeking into our neighbors’ kitchens and enjoying delicious food samples provided by local Jersey Shore restaurants and caterers.

Today’s the day for the 14th annual clam bake from noon to 5pm, rain or shine (and we’re lookin’ at lots of shine) at the fire house, 81 Bridge Avenue in Bay Head, New Jersey. The food will include clam chowder, steamers, cherry stones, hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, hot roast beef and sausage sandwiches, beer and soda. 

As or more importantly, there will be live music from the Sherman Brothers Band.  Until we saw them perform at the Bay Head Rubber Duck Derby a few weeks ago, we never knew our plumbers could rock!

Maddie will read a little poem about each dog and tell us where he lives… Bay Head, Cape Cod, or Morristown, to name a few.  Tine has been one of our favorite local artists for a long time… Rex and I have one of her paintings in our dining room and she painted our Bay Head beach house (image on the left) years and years ago, maybe even before London and Maddie were born.

This weekend, Maddie and London and all of their beach friends will have the opportunity to paint the day with Tine in a FREE event at the Anchor & Palette Gallery on Mount Street in Bay Head, New Jersey.  Trader is spending the week here with Rex’s grandkids, so we’ll have a house full of creativity at the beach.

Join Maddie, London and our gang for a Children’s Painting Workshop with Tine Kirkland Graham on Saturday, August 15th.  The Anchor & Palette Gallery is hosting two free sessions:

10am to 12 noon or 1pm to 3pm

Anyway, since we already own Wendy McCarthy’s Mermaid Swim Team, I don’t aspire to the original Mer-Mom artwork, but I would love to get a giclee (print) for Mother’s Day 2010.

Wendy McCarthy’s creative mind is always at work, whether i be imagining mermaids lounging on the edge of the water or designing illustrations for a children’s book she has written.  This Jersey Shore artist graduated from Parson’s School of Design in New York City and has spent many years designing and painting murals in private homes.  Her love of painting has recently moved to the anvas, so that her delightful creations can be shared with everyone.

Her painting, “Mermaid Swim Team,” currently on vacation from Roxy’s beach house and featured in the show at the Anchor & Palette in Bay Head, NJ, is a large canvas painted in acrylic and the first of a series titled “Mer-Moments.”  Five mermaids are lounging along the edge of the water in pastel bathing caps, perhaps waiting for the next race, surrounded by curious seagulls.  In fact, while London and Maddie attended Girl Scout Camp in Jockey Hollow last week, they received colored bathing caps determined by their swimming level… I think London was yellow and Maddie was red.  Mermaids have always been a fascination of McCarthy’s and have been the subject of other paintings, but these ladies look as though they are ready to dive in and perform water ballet for whoever ambles along the beach!  Rex, London, Maddie and I just adore them and are proud to have this beautiful original painting in our home.

Moving from murals to canvas has proven to be a unique opportunity for artist Wendy McCarthy.  “In my murals I’ve painted the beach scenes I grew up with… the waves, the sand and the sky.  My mermaid series is a fictional world created from scenario that I have imagined…mermaids doing distinctly un-mermaid-like things.”

Wendy has been known to solicit help from her family members, recruited (involuntarily) as artist’s models.  “I had to go out and buy an inner tube and put my younger daughter in it, to see wat a mermaid would look like floating in one” (for “Cocktail Hour, shown at right).  “And I have been told that the men in my paintings look a lot like my husband.”  There’s also no doubt in my mind that Wendy herself is the beautiful Mer-Mom.

No matter how challengin, this self-taught artist has succeeded in painting a series of whimsical scenes that make all of us smile.  Wendy McCarthy’s “Celebrity,” “Cocktail Hour,” “Stormy Weather,” and “Mer-Mom,” all on large canvases, have been completed and are available for sale at the Anchor & Palette Gallery, 45 Mount Street, Bay Head, NJ.  Call Anne at (732) 892-7776 and be sure to tell her Roxy sent you!

Scheduled for Saturday, July 18th, starting at 11:00am, the Great Bay Head Duck Derby includes a $10 Duck Race, gift auctions and silent auctions. The day’s events will begin at 11:00am, with the races taking place, rain or shine, on Scow Ditch at Centennial Park in Bay Head, NJ. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of yellow rubber ducks will race to the finish line.  Great prizes include an ocean kayak from Jersey Paddler, a new bicycle from Point Pleasant Bicycle, a romantic dinner at Theresa’s South, a new skateboard from Pro Skateboard Shop, and family admission to Jenkinson’s Aquarium. Anyone can sponsor a duck for ten bucks and participate in another great day of fun and food in Bay Head. For more information, please call the school (732-892-0668) or pick up tickets outside of Muellers or Curtis’ Central Market any weekend morning. Tickets are also available at Applegate’s Hardware, the W.A.S.P., the Bee, and the Jolly Tar. All proceeds go directly to benefit the Bay Head School.

There will be tons of entertainment throughout the day… last year’s Duck Derby included amazing face painting by the nationally acclaimed Peanutbutter Face Painters, cultural displays from The Bay Head Historical Society, the Boat Museum, the Anchor and Palette art gallery, photography from Hartshorn Portraiture, great live music and plenty of food!

This unique fundraising event is sponsored by the Bay Head School Foundation, which was formed and is guided by volunteers from our Bay Head community to help meet the challenges facing our small school system. The Foundation puts 100% of equities raised towards helping the school and its students in ways that the school budget cannot.

Last night, Rex and the girls and I came back up north to the Roxiticus Valley after nine days of sun and fun at the beach. We never seem to be down at our beach house in Bay Head, NJ, for enough of July to really take advantage of the terrific Bay Head Summer Recreation program, but whenever London and Maddie have the chance to participate they have a blast.

When: Monday, July 6th through Friday, August 14th
When, Part II: A half day program, Mondays through Thursdays, 9:00am - 12:00pm

Where: Bay Head Elementary School
Where, Part II: If you would like your child to participate, please complete the application in Borough Hall

Who: Children of Bay Head Residents and Renters
Who, Part II: Children Ages 5 through 12. Birth Certificate required at sign-up.

How (much): $50.00. For the whole summer. Not per day, not per week. For the whole summer.

Now, for that price, the nice teenagers who supervise your children at the Bay Head Elementary School are NOT going to teach them to swim, sail, or scuba dive. But your kids will come home with lots of cool arts and crafts and play outside when the weather is nice.

“Love the write up! We are having camp again this year at the Bay Head Elementary School Monday through Thursday, 9Am-12PM. Our fee has increased to $50 for the summer, but in my opinion that’s still a steal for 6 weeks! We are including more sports and other activities as well.Thanks for calling us teenagers, so flattering!!,but most of us (there are 4 counselors now) are either teachers or finishing up education degrees. We incorporate a lot of our teaching experience into the development and running of the camp. :-)
